Original Wallhangings by Bertha Day - inspired by our fabulous east coast scenery

With fabric painting dyes on 100% cotton and using the landscape around my home in St Andrews, New Brunswick for inspiration, I paint the landscape as a backdrop for the embroidery.

After heat setting and washing to ensure that colours are fixed, I add grasses and other foliage using free motion embroidery.   Ribbons and embroidery floss are often used to complete the foreground.  One of my most popular designs is called "Tending the Web" (see #18 below). The web wallhangings are each originals although they all have a large web as a key part of the design.  I usually also attach a three dimensional spider to the "Tending the Web" wallhangings.   I also create cushions with the web - a very popular bit of whimsey.

I add a mitered border to complement the scene.   A wooden dowel passed through a hidden sleeve in the back makes hanging easy.   The wallhangings are very colour fast and need only vacuuming from time to time.   My earliest pieces have been hanging on the walls of our home for over 20 years and there has been absolutely no loss of colour.

Please note that no two will be alike.   Because I do all of the work freehand – every one is definitely different.   It is often possible to use a different colour border on the wallhangings; however, there is some restriction on this because the border colour influences the overall look of the scene.   Blue and green borders will usually complement most of the wall hangings.  The scenes featured on the cushions can also be painted on wallhangings.
